This is my latest digital painting that I made for the Uplift contest here on CGSociety.
The thread (includes the sketches and WIPs etc.) is located here: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=235&t=610225&page=1&pp=15

For best viewing click on the image and see the 1600 x 1162 pixels version.

The image depicts the moment of contact between two explorers from very different worlds who unexpectedly meet on an alien planet. I tried to depict the emotional side of such an encounter.

I would also like to thank all those who participated in the contest! Thank you for this wonderfull experience.

The very best of luck to everyone!

Comments and critiques are welcome.

Minotaur's Leisure

Or: "Things you can do with Ariadne's thread"

“The Minotaur is quite tired of the never-ending onslaught of heroes trying to defeat him and make a name for themselves in the process.

The only good thing about it is that they occasionally bring useful things into the labyrinth - like glowing threads.”

I made this for a contest on another website. The topic is: "Catacombs"

I used Corel Painter X again here. I love to work with Painter since it almost feels as if I use real oil paints. When I paint I feel more like a sculptor actually, carving a 3rd dimension out or into the 2 dimensional screen. I enjoy this immensely.

Some facts about the painting: everything is brushwork, I didn't use any textures. Obviously used the "glow-brush" a lot. Didn't use any reference as such, no overpainting or anything only looked at my own legs, did a little anatomy research and looked at my own photo of a Greek helmet and a cow. All in all there were about 90 layers in the painting. It took about 4 days of intense work to complete it.

C&C are welcome of course.

The Sentinel

This is one of my first forays into digital painting. As you can see I didn't try to achieve anything like a "rendered" look - I love when one can see that it's painted and one can see brush strokes etc.

It was inspired by an actual place in the Austrian Alps. I used my own photograph of the site for reference. It's an overcast day. The only "trick" I used was to trace the outline of the background to save time. The peculiar looking rocks in the foreground were also there in real place.

My Idea was to give the place some mystical, magical ingredient - so I've added the dragon/grifon and warrior.

Made in February 2008 for a contest on another webpage.
